Lightweight and compact are just two ways to describe the PureSteam XL Canister Garment Steamer. After all, it’s only 16-inches by 12.5 inches and weighs approximately 10.6 pounds – which makes it easy to move around from place to place. Unfortunately, the reason it’s so light is also one of its main drawbacks, but I’ll get to that in a moment. First, I want to tell you more about the features of this unit.
This garment steamer features a 7-foot electric cord, a 5-foot steam hose and easy-roll wheels that really do make it easy to push from one location to the next. It also has a 1/2-gallon water tank which takes about 45 seconds to 1 minute to heat up and delivers about an hour of steam.
Of course, features don’t really give you an idea of how well a steamer does its job. In order to determine if this unit was the best garment steamer, I had to run it through a variety of test runs on a number of different fabrics.
I tested it on my some of my finer cotton shirts and then on some heavier cotton items such as French terry cotton and Egyptian cotton fabrics. I even tested it on some of my denim jeans. And what I noticed is that for lighter cotton fabrics, this unit really did a marvelous job. However, it didn’t do as good a job as I had hoped on the heavier fabrics. It eventually got the job done but I had to make a few more passes than I would’ve liked.
I was happy, however, that this unit didn’t spit water while it was in use. Which, to be quite honest, I kind of thought it would because the unit does have a flimsy feel. It just seems like they used too much plastic in its construction. Its construction may make it lighter than comparable steamers, but it also makes me question whether or not this steamer will last for the long term.
All things considered, I think this steamer is a good one for around the house but if you are looking for a more professional quality steamer, then I’d look elsewhere. This one will get the job done but it isn’t the best garment steamer on the market at this time.
